Today I’m doing a little compare and contrast. The picture on the left was taken last summer, the morning after returning from a week of CIY. The picture on the right was taken of me this morning, the morning after returning from a week of CIY. It goes without saying that this trip, for me, was the most enjoyable trip I have ever taken as a youth leader.

I recently went on a trip with high schoolers to a conference called CIY MOVE. Now that I was trying to actually get high schoolers to focus for longer than one hour, I was overwhelmed by the amount of distractions that kids have in their lives. This post will discuss a few of the most prominent distractions. (More …)

have you heard of this book called Thrilled to Death? mrs. udell told me about it. its about the over stimulation of the pleasure center of people’s brains, especially in the US where we have our tv on, our laptop out, and we’re talking on the phone… i want to read it.

I haven’t read it. But it sounds like it’s very interesting.

Honestly, sometimes I feel like the computer is my distraction. I spend so much time on it. I do everything on it for work: email, website stuff, facebook, etc.

It might be nice to try an experiment where I go without for a week or two.

one of the things that book talks about (or so ive heard, i haven’t read it yet…) is that once people stop using things like internet/phone/tv they have to de-tox because its an actual addiction. so weird.

hey Logan… I know i’m commenting on this a bit late. I’m playing catchup with your posts. Throughly enjoying them.

Awhile back I was also struck with the ammount of “White Noise” we have in our lives. It gets scary when you think wonder what it would be like to be God trying to find a time when we are LISTENING. JUST listening.
I link it to his calling for us to have a day of Sabbath. It is such an important, integral, concept. A priority to God! But we don’t hardly keep it. how would our lives change if we did.
      Anyway. thanks brother.
Distractions in my life: random unfinished projects i pick up anytime i have free time, cell phone, (we don’t have internet, so that’s not anymore), and cleaning.

I could keep suplementing this post with more and more data as I spend more time with kids. Sometimes it can be frustrating to want so desperately to teach kids the most important things in the universe, and watch them reject my advances over and over again for things that don’t matter. Things like band, drum-line, football, video games, dance, even homework and family are common excuses. All of these things feel important. But none of them are of utmost importance.

No doubt we all live with our distractions. We all invite them to take the place of what’s most important. I know I do.
